Eat a Salad Every Day

I apologize to those of you in the Northeast who might’ve logged on today in hopes of seeing a recipe that falls under the warm-and-cozy category, and not a dutiful looking kale salad studded with wheat berries.

The truth of the matter is, the warm-and-cozy stuff happened yesterday in our house, as soon as school sent word of early dismissal due to the impending storm. I crammed in a little work at home (operative word = “little”) then embraced the day off like a kind of maniacal kindergarten teacher. Abby, whose favorite activity when she was six or seven, was “Restaurant” begged her sister and me to turn the living room into “Cafe Juno,” and before I knew it, she was strapping an apron around my waist, table-cloth-ing a coffee table, typing up a menu, and asking for the daily specials.

Phoebe ordered the fried chickpeas with yogurt and tamarind sauce, Abby went with a “baked ravioli melt” (think baked ziti but with ravioli) and in addition to the 85% tip the girls left me in the fake billfold, I got to gorge on all the food left over in both pots. Score!
Next up: Cookie baking. I wasn’t involved in that project, but I did somehow show up just in time for bowl-licking, and again, 8-10 minutes later, for cookie-testing.

(Phoebe was making the “playdate cookies” from Dinner: A Love Story, replacing the M&Ms with dark chocolate chunks, so naturally they tested and tasted amazing.) An hour or two, and a cup or two of hot chocolates with whipped cream later, Gabrielle Hamilton’s Cider-braised Chicken was simmering on the stovetop for dinner, Andy’s broccoli was sizzling away in a hot hot oven, and I was assembling a little cheese plate for everyone to nibble on, complete with fig jam. There may or may not have been a bag of Trader Joe’s cheese puffs on the counter just for good measure. For dessert, more of Phoebe’s cookies. Plural.
What is it about Snow Days that wake up the holiday indulgence gene? I have to say, it’s kind of great.
But it’s only great for a day or two before I start to feel like I need to reign it in a little, to get back to my weekday eating routine, where it’s not entirely normal to go through a four-pack of butter in one afternoon. (The bag of cheese doodles, those are another story.) I woke up this morning realizing I have a relatively new philosophy for weekday eating that I haven’t really shared with you, so figured now was as good a time as any. It boils down to this:

My friend Lia gave me this advice last fall, after I asked what she was doing that made her look so great — right down to her awesome haircut — and I immediately embraced her words as my new worldview. You know me, every few months I’ll convince myself to omit gluten, or go Vegan, or forgo all carbs, but these all-or-nothing deals never stick. All I have to do is log onto instagram — I don’t know about your feed, but mine is an endless stream of salted caramel baked goods — before I’m raiding the fridge.

I’m weak. I know this about myself now, which is why Lia’s salad line made so much sense to me. It meant that one meal, usually lunch, would be plant-based and feel-good, and wholesome with enough redemptive power to, say, erase whatever transgressions may be forthcoming at dinner. It’s not a “plan” or a “diet” or a “program,” exactly. It’s more like a forgiving and folksy philosophy about staying healthy.

I love these mini-philosophies. In fact, I’ve amassed a lot of them over the years, and together I like to think they add up to the official DALS guide to healthy eating. Like Lia’s, all came from friends:

1. From Cynthia: Health is not a number, it’s a feeling.
2. From Rory: Don’t worry about calorie counting, just worry that everything you eat is healthy and wholesome. (And yes, dark chocolate counts.)
3. From Tiffani*: Nothing else really matters if you don’t get enough sleep and water.
4. From Lee: Giving in to temptation is fine. Just not every single time temptation is presented.
I’d like to emphasize that just because these are the philosophies that have stayed with me, and the ones I’m doing my best to pass down to the girls, it doesn’t mean I am faithfully sticking to the script every minute of every day. That’s just silly. Today, though, today I am sticking to the script. Bittersweet Brownies with Salted Peanut Butter Frosting be damned.

A Few Salad Ideas that Fit the Bill

- Way up top is chopped kale with wheat berries, shredded beets, raisins, with a citrus-y dressing. I found it in my iPhone photo library so forgive the fuzziness. I’m pretty sure it was assembled at the Whole Foods salad bar.

- Shown right here is one of my favorites: A mix of greens (Bibb & baby arugula) with beets, feta, scallions, cukes, fresh dill, and (not shown) pistachios or pepitas. The dressing is a simple white balsamic-olive oil emulsion. Followed by lots of freshly ground black pepper.
- I am a huge fan of chopped kale, raw unsalted almond slivers, and raisins. Olive oil and red wine vinegar. So simple, so satisfying.

*OK fine, this “Tiffani” is Tiffani Thiessen, who is not necessarily a “friend” per se, but I did read once that she liked my book enough to buy two copies: one for her LA house and one for her NY apartment. So I’m pretty sure that comes close to counting.

I've been meaning to write about my beautiful surprise birthday party

I've been meaning to write about my beautiful surprise birthday party for, oh, over a month now... but you know, busy-ness and the holidays and excuses excuses excuses. On this dreary Monday morning, however, I've finally gotten to it, and I'm having such a nice time reliving this oh-so-sweet evening.

On Decemeber 5th, I turned 28, which is weird all unto itself, seeing as how my twenties are creeping to a close and in some ways I still feel so young and others I feel so old. In some ways I feel so accomplished, and others I feel so panicky for not being further along. But that's another post for another day.

Also on December 5th, a few friends threw me a surprise birthday party, which was, indeed, an actual surprise!  In the last year or two, I've grown close to a beauty named Brittany who started her own event rentals company (Birch & Brass Vintage Rentals) here in Austin, of which I've helped to photograph the inventory over the course of many sweaty photo shoots and hundreds of beautiful pieces. Brittany is so, so good at styling perfect tablescapes and vignettes, and I always wished I knew her before our wedding or some other excuse to have her style an event for me.

Well now, thanks to her expertise and kindness, I have this incredibly perfect little party to look back on fondly, much thanks to Shalyn's gorgeous photos of the evening. I was so in shock that night, I barely took in all the details. Another reason that photography is so important: to capture and freeze time so you can go back and enjoy special moments over and over again.

There was fried chicken and other southern-style comfort foods (my absolute favorites), rum punch (another fave), cake and cupcakes and doughnuts (because you KNOW I love my sweets), a ridiculous piñata I had to whack about 47 times before it finally broke, and karaoke and quality time with sweet friends I was so grateful to for taking the time out of their Friday night to attend.

Thank you so much, Brittany, for one of the most thoughtful things anyone has ever done for me, and to Celine & Justin for hosting and for handling all of the mess that comes with that, and to Shay for taking the most beautiful photos and creating the most gorgeous little placecards, and to Kelsey & Jona, John & Kirsten, Kate, Emilie, Federico, and of course Matthew, all for attending.

Let It Go: 6 Action Steps You Can Take To Help You “Let It Go”

breakup-like-a-man-660x400Let it go. That’s where I’m at. How about you? Let it go. The things that are not in my control, the things that are not mine to make a decision on, LET IT GO.
So much time, effort, and energy are spent on things we have no control over. It can weigh you down, make you angry, and put your mood in the pits. Here are some of the things we do when we hold on to certain situations that we should just let go:
Complain
Fuss and fight
Get angry
Hold a grudge
Become down, sad or depressed
Here are 6 actions steps you can take to help you let it go:
1. Make a decision that whatever it is will no longer have a hold on you.
2. Write down action steps to move you forward and keep you on track.

3. Look at the circumstance and be honest about the truth of the situation.

4. Keep your mind centered on good thoughts that lift your spirit.

5. Get around people, things, or activities that make you smile.

6. Do the self work to stay in a place of joy.

Making the step to let go of things you cannot change may be easy for some but it can also be a challenge, a work, and a process. Be kind to yourself. Take the time needed to work the process. However, be consistent and not give up.

Writing down an action plan will help you to stay on course. Put it in your electronic device and refer to it often. Tape it on your mirror, so you see it each morning. Throughout the day keep your mind centered on good things. Write down a positive declaration if that helps and say it often. Allow yourself to move through the nervousness and grief that may come with letting go.

I am no psychologist or therapist but a person like you who has had to work through some “stuff” and let some things go. The 6 steps above helped me to do just that. I hope they are beneficial to you as well.

I don't spend the weekends with my boyfriend

From a female LIB reader
I have been dating this guy for about 3 and a half months and I have only spent two weekends with him. I only see him during the week. For the weekends he always has an excuse for us not to meet but eager to see me during the week.
He comes over to my house from work and spends time but from Friday till Sunday he's no show.
Should I confront him about it or just leave him alone? Also, I have never spent the night in his house before, maybe I am the side chick?

12 Yr Old Girl Jumps from 14 Storey Building after Her Parents Caught Her Watching Porn

A 12 year-old Russian girl in St. Petersburg, Russia killed herself Wednesday, jumping from her block of flats after her parents discovered she'd been watching online pornography.
The girl, whose first name was given by police as Daria, reportedly entered into a heated argument with her parents after they discovered she had been surfing porn web sites on her personal computer.

Immediately after the exchange, local police said she jumped to her death from her 14th floor flat.
'After the death of the adolescent her parents looked through her texts and found several messages from the girl’s friends. The content was of quite an obscene nature,' a source from local law enforcement officials told LifeNews.

The official noted that the girl was raised in 'a normal two-parent household. One that had never had any problems with either the authorities or child custody services.'
'There is an ongoing investigation. We aren't excluding the possibility of bringing up charges on inciting a suicide,' the source added.
Despite the authorities' claims of domestic bliss, the girl's parents reportedly wanted to divorce and her mother planned to return to her hometown of Yeisk on the Black Sea.
Daria's older sister was killed in a car accident nine years ago.
News of the incident sparked a fierce debate among Russian internet users.

Some blamed the parents saying, 'I can only imagine what they might have told the poor girl.'
'They should have spoken with her calmly. This is such a delicate situation,' another user wrote.
Others said that the distribution of porn online should be stopped or restricted.

'We’re reaping the fruits of overindulgence. Restricted access to web sites with questionable content needs to be guaranteed,' one user commented.

In 2012, Russia adopted harsh laws on the distribution of 'harmful material' - including porn - to minors.

Government authorities in Moscow say the goal is to protect minors from web sites that feature explicit sexual content, details about how to commit suicide, drug use and sites that solicit children for pornography.

If the websites themselves cannot be shut down, internet service providers (ISPs) and web hosting companies can be forced to block access to the offending material.

My boss is making me uncomfortable

From a female LIB reader
I am a corps member serving in Yenagoa. I have a work problem and it's with my immediate boss. He calls me "baby" or "my baby" or "my darling".
He uses my name and surname as his password. He rubs my shoulders and looks at me in a lecherous way. When he started offering me money, I refused but he covered up and said he gives me because of the amount of workload I carry and that I shouldn't refuse again when he does.
He offers me lifts and I refuse with the excuse that I have somewhere else to go, not home. But the shocker is that recently, he told me he is falling in love with me and that I shouldn't be scared. Continue...
I truly don't understand what that means and how I should go about it. Should I really be scared? Should I keep away from him? I will be done in June so I still have a couple of months to be in the office. What should I do? And yes, he is married with children.
I don't believe in using my body to get "what I want". Infact, I think it's disgusting. I'd rather hustle on my own and make my own money.

Very Angry Husband Releases Chat and Private Photos of Cheating Wife

Being smart in a marriage does not make you wise. Seeing your partner as stupid or cheap is the most foolish thing you would ever have done, as this lady thought she was too wise so she decided to make extra bucks by chatting se-xy and showing her nakkedness to people she met on BBM for money.

I had sex at 7, am I still a virgin?

Dear Yemisi,

I need your help. I once had sex with my playmate when I was in Primary Four at the age of seven .
But after starting menstruating at 13 years, I have not had sex till date. I am in 100 level in an institution of higher learning and I am not ready for sex until I am married.
My problem is that I don’t know if I am still a virgin.
I am confused and also worried.
Judith, Kogi ,09*********.

Dear Judith,

The answer to your question is yes and no. What you must work on now so as not to get more confused is yourself. What happened to you then was as a result of ignorance and the better it will be if you forgive yourself. It is when this is done that you can be free from the guilt of the past.

How old was your playmate then? How did you confirm then that you had sex? Did your playmate force you or you consented? Whether it was with your consent or not, you must put it behind you so as to be able to think straight.

Judith, as long as your hymen is broken, it won’t grow back. Or are you sure that it was not broken? As long as you are sure you had sex and not only fingering, it is likely to be back to its original shape since your skin and muscles and tissues had the ability to bounce back, and don’t forget that it has been quite long since the incident happened .

Dear LIB readers: My husband hates to cuddle in bed

From a female LIB reader
I've been married for just four months and I must say marriage is not at all what I expected.
It's not bad, but its a little different from when two people are dating, or maybe mine is just peculiar. What gets me the most is that my husband doesn't like to cuddle in bed. After sex, he wants me as far away from him as possible on the bed.
When I put my hands around him, he tells me to give him space, saying he's uncomfortable with anything touching him when he's sleeping.
And this is supposed to be forever? I like to cuddle, I want to be held by my man, I want to be able to sleep in his arms but not this man I married. He wants none of that.
How do I convince him that is the best way two people who like each other should sleep? I need my cuddles

What Marriage is Really Like: One Woman’s Perspective

It’s rare that I come across an article where a woman is transparent with what marriage can look like day to day. I applaud Mrs. Natalie Thomas for her courage and willingness to share a glimpse into her life with the world. Click on her name to follow her on the social networks.

“You will HATE him!”
Years ago, I attended the wedding of one of my closest friends. Another friend, now living out of state, already married with a 6-month-old, was telling us how exasperated she was with her husband. She warned the rest of us, responsibility-free, about what our future entailed.
I thought her statement was harsh. And that she needed anger management or couples counseling. I actually feared for her marriage — and her husband.
Fast-forward five years and I completely understand. She wasn’t unstable or angry; she was married with a kid.
My mom and sister tried, albeit in a nicer way, to prepare me too. But, like every person in the throes of young love, I thought he was different, we were different.
The only thing different was the stage we were in compared to others. You can’t tell a high on life honeymooner that their vacation will one day end. That it isn’t all Mai Tais and massages. That life, a full life, with a significant other is an intoxicating, thrilling, ever-turning ride, yes, but one that you often want to get off, stop the spinning, lie down on the cold tile floor, grab the barf bag and dump it on his head.
And just when you think you’re about to pull the emergency brake, that you can’t take one more minute, suddenly you’re soaring, hands raised, heart aflutter.
Or when you think you can’t love him more, be happier or luckier, the bottom drops out. After all that’s what love is, living life to the brink, eyes welled with tears, head filled with fears, heart about to burst, never feeling more scared, vulnerable or alive. It’s a cycle and if we see it through long enough, white-knuckle through the bad, it’ll always come back around to the good. At least that’s what I tell myself.
My personal relationship roller coaster has gone somewhat like this…
Initial spark. Want to know everything about him. Can’t stop thinking about him. Planning our lives together in my head after our first meeting.
Bad first date. Over him. Pick apart everything about him. What was I even thinking?
A year passes. I think about him from time to time. Replay everything in my head. See him again. That spark. Best second, first date ever. Back to swooning. He’s everything.
He’s moving back to Texas. Over him. List of reasons in my head why it never would have worked. Break him down. Move on.
A year later. Our friends’ wedding. Mexico. That spark. Margaritas. Infinity pools overlooking the Cortez. More margaritas. Game over.
He moves back from Texas to New York. We move in together, can’t get enough of each other. Obsessed. Inseparable. Until we fight about his old, ugly dresser and too many throw pillows, placing our independence on inanimate objects.
Once we get past the pillows, it’s like playing house. Forbidden and fun.
We become engaged. Euphoria.
We start wedding planning. Hell.
We contemplate calling off the wedding, breaking up.
Honeymoon. Heaven.

WAIT FOR LOVE

“Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you by the gazelles and by the does of the field: Do not arouse or awaken love until it so desires.”

You can’t hurry love: Diana Ross sang those words, but they capture the meaning of the refrain repeated a few times in Song of Songs: “Love cannot be forced, and it must be patiently waited for.” “Songs of Songs” by Jack S. Deer, The Bible Knowledge Commentary: Old Testament, pg. 1015 (1983).

I have to confess that I was getting so excited about discussing this verse primarily in the context of sexual purity. It’s no secret I’m passionate about the message—and this verse is often used as a warning to save sex for matrimony. Although this point is still relevant and will be addressed, a closer reading of the references show the statement can be interpreted as an even more holistic charge to approach every aspect of love with patience.

Each time the statement is made by Beloved. The “Daughters of Jerusalem” are probably the female inhabitants of the city. Deer, pg. 1012. Beloved appears to be speaking as a somewhat older woman talking to younger ones, or to those not necessarily younger, but who have not yet experienced true love. Use of “by the does and gazelles of the field” is an ode to graceful animals that likely would have been referenced if the Beloved and Lover were literally in a field, or if the Beloved were thinking of one. The scene of these animals frolicking in an open space conjures up whimsical images of love in a warm, sunny season, like spring time (not in a snowy winter—lol!).

This refrain is repeated three times in the Book: Chapter 2 verse 4; Chapter 3 verse 5; Chapter 8 verse 4. It also is said that, in addition to seeing the refrain as a plea to wait for love, Beloved meant it as “a reminder to all those desiring a love like the one she and the [Lover] had to wait [diligently] for God to bring it in their lives.” Deer, pg. 1015. Further, it has been explained that each reference occurs “as a structural indicator to mark the ending of one section and to introduce the next one.” Deer, pg. 1015. We’ll look at the context for each reference.

Chapter Two, Verse 4

The first reference, where we last left off, was said by the Beloved after praising her Lover and expressing how he made her feel secure. In the verse directly before the first charge, verse three, she says, “His left arm is under my head, and his right arm embraces me.” Then, the words: “Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you by the gazelles and by the does of the field: Do not arouse or awaken love until it so desires.” In that context, the refrain can be seen as an uttering of delight given the comfort she feels with her Lover. She essentially tells the daughters that they too can experience the kind of love she has, but they must wait for it. And it is worth it— she’s savoring the moment!

After the statement, the transition involves the Beloved and the Lover going away together. In verse five, the Lover comes to pick her up. Seeing him from a distance, she says with glee in verse eight, “Listen! My Lover! Look! Here he comes, leaping across the mountains, bounding over the hills.” A couple verses later, the Lover says to Beloved, “Arise, my darling, and come with me” (v. 9). He makes almost the same request in verse 13b: “Arise, come, my darling, my beautiful one, and come with me.” In verses 11-12a he describes what appears to be, again, spring time: “the winter is past” (v. 11); flowers are in bloom (v. 12) and trees are beginning to bear fruit (v. 13). The excitement they both display about going away together also indicates that it is a blissful time in their relationship that both treasure. By some interpretations, they are in courtship. Deer, pgs. 1014-1015. The Beloved and the Lover have waited for Love, and it has come!

Chapter 3, verse 5

The next reference to the refrain comes after what appears to be a dream Beloved has in which she fears losing her Lover. It will be addressed in more detail in the next entry. But the refrain (“Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you by the gazelles and by the does of the field: Do not arouse or awaken love until it so desires") occurs right before what could be the couple’s wedding, which, by that interpretation, runs from Chapter 3 verse six through Chapter 5 verse 1. Deer, pg. 1015. By waiting for love, the Beloved and the Lover are not only able to overcome doubts about the relationship, but also see it reach a new height. And so she urges the Daughters of Jerusalem to wait for love!

Chapter 8, verse 4

Before the last use of the refrain, in the final chapter of the book, the Beloved is expressing a longing for an even greater intimacy with her Lover —seeking their love to reach yet another plane even after their union. She again speaks of the security of her Lover: “His left arm is under my head and his right arm embraces me” (verse 3). The verses that follow are an expression of the blessing their love has brought them over time. Deer, pgs. 1023-1024. And the way the Book ends in the last chapter also is worth waiting until the end of the series to discuss.

On the Refrain

I think the refrain is such a good reminder. I love that it is addressed to the Daughters of Jerusalem, and probably means only women (as opposed to “daughters” meaning all inhabitants, male and female). I think women tend to struggle way more with hurrying love. We express dreams of it much more often than men do—many of us from childhood, with our dress-up clothes and bridal gown cutouts. And as we grow older, the rush to hurry love comes with a price—giving away our bodies, our hearts —our dreams—for someone not so willing to sacrifice the same.

We also allow society to hurry love for us. Sometimes it’s family members—a mother wondering when she’ll get those grandkids; friends who have already tied the knot urging the same; the notion of the “biological clock” ticking.

But whatever the challenge, we must understand that when we do not wait for love, we cannot have what we even desired in the first place. Proverbs 14:12 says, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end leads to death.” How many times have we, male and female, rushed love (through sex, emotions, or both)—only to be momentarily satisfied, but have lasting heartbreak? Love is an area we crash in a lot. But when we wait patiently, for His love, He protects us from burn! Also, thank God He is forviging when we do stray, but we still have to face the consequences of our decision to rush love--ones that He wanted to protect us from!

No Awakening or Arousal

The verse also points out that waiting for love involves avoiding both awakening or arousing it.

Relevant definitions of “awake” are “to wake up; arouse from sleep” and "to come or bring to an awareness; become cognizant.” The connotation of those definitions is a forced one—i.e., unearthing something manually. From that perspective, “awaken” in the passage can be viewed as “unearthing” love by forcing the wrong relationship (with the wrong person), at the wrong time—in attempt to create love.

Here, however, “arouse” seems to have a different connotation—one of taking an existing foundation for love that is proper, but putting it in the wrong context. A definition of arouse is “to stir to action or strong response; excite.” Using that denotation, love can be improperly “aroused” by perhaps being with a person who God provides, but making decisions in the relationship before marriage that do not honor him.

Considering both of these definitions, waiting patiently for love is twofold: 1) not just waiting for the right man or woman but, 2) when that person does come, allowing God to write your love story in His timing—not ours (never read the book linked to, but love the title!)

I also think the refrain is a reminder for men to be sensitive to women’s desire for love, protecting and nurturing it at God’s leading. In my past reads of this book, I never really noticed how much more the Beloved expresses her musings about love as compared to her Lover. The Lover is of course an integral part of the book, but most of his role is to reinforce Beloved, as he does in the first chapter discussed in the previous (blog) entry, and throughout the book. And if you just flip through Song of Songs, you will find Beloved speaks way more. And when the Lover is most vocal, it is in Chapter four, which is often interpreted as their wedding night (we’ll get to that). At each point in the book, he is reassuring her—she takes her cues about their love from his words and actions. So when Beloved urges the daughters of Jerusalem three times not to arouse love, she’s speaking from the experience of having what the women dream of—with a man who really took the time to cultivate a lasting love with her.

Ladies, men who God brings our way must be willing to unlock love in the same manner as the Lover. Too often men feel that a woman guarding her heart necessarily means rejection. But a man who wants to do love God’s way must be assured that, if He is acting at God’s leading, in time love will blossom. And, on the other hand, the woman also must wait for it to blossom—not give it away prematurely. Looking back after love has been timely awakened, the couple will thank each other, as the Lover and Beloved do—and see God bring more boon to their love!

Conclusion

I love the reminder from the refrain, “Don’t awaken or arouse love until it so desires.” Ultimately, God wants us all to have a healthy view of love. Too often, because of our past decisions and the poor examples of love we see around us, we become disheartened by it. But that is not in God’s design for us. Love patiently waited for reaps a wonderful harvest that pleases God. Yes, Our Creator is a Love God, and as they say, a "Sex God" who delights in love making as he intended it—in marriage! Even if you see no examples of pure, righteous love around you, you have His Word. So let’s love Love—and not be disheartened by the wait. It will be worth it!

Ecclesiastes (which was probably written by the man who probably wrote Song of Songs, King Solomon), Chapter 3, verse 11, says: “He has made everything beautiful in his time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end.”

We may think waiting for love is an eternity—but guess what? Eternity is in His hands, and within them the power to create for us romantic love that lasts. From that perspective, we just have to wait a moment.
